Summary
The Subtle Knife is the second installment in Philip Pullman's acclaimed His Dark Materials trilogy. Published in 1997, this young adult fantasy novel continues the adventures of Lyra Belacqua and introduces a new protagonist, Will Parry. Set across multiple universes, the book explores themes of consciousness, religion, and coming-of-age against the backdrop of a cosmic conflict. The novel has received critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the Parents' Choice Gold Book Award and recognition as an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults.
Plot
In The Subtle Knife, 12-year-old Will Parry from Oxford accidentally kills an intruder and flees to another world through a mysterious window. There, he meets Lyra Silvertongue in the haunted city of Cittàgazze. The two children form an alliance as they navigate this strange realm plagued by soul-eating Spectres that prey on adults.
As Lyra seeks to understand the enigmatic Dust particles, she consults her alethiometer and visits physicist Dr. Mary Malone in Will's world. Meanwhile, Will searches for information about his missing father. Their quest becomes complicated when Lyra's alethiometer is stolen by Sir Charles Latrom, who demands they retrieve a powerful knife from Cittàgazze in exchange. Will obtains the knife, becoming its new bearer at the cost of two fingers, and learns of its ability to cut windows between worlds.
The story expands to include other characters on interconnected missions. Mrs. Coulter, Lyra's mother, tortures a witch for a prophecy about her daughter. Lee Scoresby, an aeronaut, searches for Stanislaus Grumman, who possesses knowledge of a powerful object. Serafina Pekkala, a witch, attempts to protect Lyra. As events unfold, it becomes clear that Lyra is at the center of a cosmic conflict, with Mrs. Coulter determined to prevent a prophesied second Fall.
The novel climaxes with Will meeting his father, John Parry (also known as Grumman), who instructs him to join Lord Asriel's rebellion against the Authority. Tragedy strikes as John Parry is killed by a vengeful witch, and Will returns to find Lyra missing, presumably kidnapped. The story ends on this cliffhanger, setting the stage for the final book in the trilogy.

Setting
The Subtle Knife is set across multiple worlds, primarily in the late 20th or early 21st century. The story unfolds in a multiverse where parallel universes exist alongside our own. While the exact time period is not explicitly stated, the technology and societal norms depicted suggest a contemporary setting.
The main geographical areas explored in the novel include Lyra's world, which is similar to our own but with some key differences, and Cittàgazze, a mysterious otherworld. Lyra's Oxford serves as a familiar starting point, contrasting with the haunted streets of Cittàgazze where soul-eating Spectres roam. Will's world, which closely resembles our reality, is another significant setting, particularly the Oxford of his universe.
Specific locations play crucial roles in the narrative. These include Dr. Mary Malone's laboratory in Will's Oxford, where groundbreaking research on Dust takes place, and the Torre degli Angeli in Cittàgazze, home to the subtle knife. The novel also ventures into other worlds through windows cut by the knife, expanding the geographical scope beyond these primary settings.
Characters
Lyra Belacqua/Silvertongue: The Brave and clever protagonist from the first book, Lyra continues her journey to understand Dust and her destiny. She forms a strong bond with Will and learns to use the alethiometer through intuition. Lyra's actions are central to the prophecy about a second Eve.
Will Parry: A determined 12-year-old boy from our world who becomes the new bearer of the subtle knife. Will is fiercely protective of his mentally ill mother and searches for his long-lost father. He develops a close friendship with Lyra as they navigate dangerous situations together across multiple worlds.
Mrs. Coulter: Lyra's ruthless and manipulative mother. She tortures a witch for information about the prophecy concerning Lyra and learns to control the soul-eating Spectres. Mrs. Coulter plans to destroy Lyra to prevent a second Fall.
Lord Asriel: Lyra's father, who is gathering forces to rebel against the Authority. Though he is not directly present in this book, his actions drive much of the plot forward.
Dr. Mary Malone: A physicist studying dark matter, which corresponds to Dust in Lyra's world. She communicates with dark matter consciousness and is instructed to “play the serpent” in another world.
Lee Scoresby: A loyal aeronaut who seeks out Stanislaus Grumman to protect Lyra. He sacrifices his life to help Grumman complete his mission.
Serafina Pekkala: A witch queen who protects Lyra and attempts to heal Will's injured hand. She arrives too late to save Lee Scoresby.
John Parry/Stanislaus Grumman/Jopari: Will's father, who has been living as a shaman in another world. He briefly reunites with Will before being killed by a vengeful witch.
Sir Charles Latrom/Lord Boreal: A manipulative figure from Lyra's world living in Will's Oxford. He steals Lyra's alethiometer and is later poisoned by Mrs. Coulter.
Pantalaimon: Lyra's dæmon, who takes various animal forms and provides counsel to her. He represents an externalized part of Lyra's soul.
