Plot
In 1983, home health aide Kit McDeere arrives at Hope's End, a decaying mansion on the Maine coast, to care for Lenora Hope. Lenora, now in her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, was accused of murdering her family in 1929 but never convicted. Unable to speak due to a series of strokes, Lenora communicates with Kit using a typewriter. One night, she makes an intriguing offer to Kit: “I want to tell you everything."
As Kit helps Lenora recount the events leading up to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear that there's more to the story than previously known. The narrative alternates between Kit's present-day experiences at Hope's End and Lenora's account of the past. Kit meets the mansion's staff, including housekeeper Mrs. Baker, cook Archie, maid Jessie, and groundskeeper Carter, who believes he's Lenora's illegitimate grandson.
Kit's investigation takes an unexpected turn when she discovers the body of Mary Milton, Lenora's previous nurse who had mysteriously disappeared, on the beach below Hope's End. This revelation, along with new information about the night of the murders, leads Kit to question Lenora's version of events. She begins to suspect that the seemingly harmless old woman might be more dangerous than she initially thought.
