My main passion in life is to help people be better at what they do.  I started my journey by earning my B.S. in Kinesiology while playing college softball for the University of Minnesota. After 15 years of playing and competing in softball at the National Level, I fell in love with performance's mental and emotional side.  I wanted to teach other athletes what I learned, so I earned a Master's Degree in Mental Health/Sport Psychology from Boston University in 2008.  In addition to my experiences as an elite athlete and formal education, I have been a Master Resilience Trainer-Performance Expert with the Army’s Performance/Resilience Program since 2008. I've traveled all over the world working with and training Soldiers and their families to use mental skills to be at their best when it matters the most.  As part of this work, I teach classes on Resilience and the ability to improve your self-awareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, the strength of character, and connection with others by applying simple tools from the world of Positive Psychology.  My goal is to incorporate a holistic wellness component into my work with clients.  Sometimes your health affects your performance, and vice versa.  I enjoy teaching and coaching people, especially teenage athletes, to use mental skills and tools to get more out of themselves and their lives.  Check out my coaching programs at www.valstoncoaching.com, check out great tips on Facebook/Instagram @valstoncoaching, or download my app "Toughness Trainer" on App Store/Google Play. There are many ways I can help you build your mental toughness. In my spare time, when I am not working or doing yard work, I get my sweat on at the local Crossfit Gym.  While I am no longer a competitive athlete, I love the camaraderie and opportunity to practice what I preach.  When I finished my softball career and got out of grad school, I realized I had never worked out by myself a day in my life, and missed people.  Crossfit gave me the opportunity to meet great people and attempt to stay fit.   I love to travel and have been to 35 countries.  I lived in Germany for 3 years (working for the Army), which greatly increased my access to travel.  Exploring new places and learning about new cultures through food, drink and music has been an amazing experience.  Some of my favorite memories involve my adventures abroad, from bungee jumping in New Zealand on Christmas Eve, riding camels and "glamping" in Morocco, eating street food in Korea, enjoying Oktoberfest in Munich, biking through Tuscany and watching ballet in Moscow.   I've had some great opportunities to meet people from all walks of life, and I try to bring that perspective to my work.  I am a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology and a trained Health and Wellness Coach from the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy (FMCA).
