Tony Perkins is Family Research Council’s fourth and longest-serving president, joining the organization in August of 2003. The Family Research Council is a nonprofit that shapes public debate and formulates public policy that values human life and upholds the institutions of marriage and the family. Described as a legislative pioneer by the national media, Perkins has established himself as an innovative pro-life and pro-family policy and political leader since first being elected to office in 1996. Keeping his commitment to serving only two terms, he had a significant impact on politics in his home state of Louisiana as a state representative and as a candidate for the United States Senate in 2002. Perkins was a tireless advocate for the family during his tenure in the Louisiana State Legislature, where he authored and passed the nation’s first Covenant Marriage law in 1997. Perkins is an ordained minister who is active in Christian ministries, serving as an elder in his home church and frequently speaking at other churches across the country. He is the host of a daily syndicated radio show, “Washington Watch with Tony Perkins,” and frequently appears as a guest on national news programs and talk shows including Fox News, CBS News and CNN. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a former police officer, Perkins holds a bachelor of science from Liberty University and a master of public administration from Louisiana State University. He also has an honorary doctorate of divinity from Liberty University. Perkins and his wife, Lawana, have been married since 1986 and have five children.
