I have been a computer scientist my entire working life – and artificial intelligence is a passion of mine, not my profession. That may be why I write about systems: the kind that make perfect sense from the inside, and the people who have to live within them.

In the fantasy trilogy Torak, that system is a world called Vilares – dark, and indifferent to the people in it. In Die siebzehnte Iteration (The Seventeenth Iteration) it is an artificial intelligence that never threatens and always wins – and might turn out to be right. Two genres, one question: how much freedom do we give up when what we are offered in return looks like care?

I write for adult readers. I like leaving the beaten track and would rather sit a shade off the mainstream – and I send my characters on journeys that rarely end well for them.

Born in Hamburg in 1964, raised in Flensburg. That is still home, even after more than thirty years near Darmstadt. Married, two grown-up children, and a dog who has yet to grow up.
