I am one-third of MY THREE SHRINKS (iTunes podcast). The other thirds include Dinah Miller and Anne Hanson. Tweets from our blog can be followed from @shrinkraproy. My Health IT tweets can be followed from @HITshrink. We also write a popular psychiatry blog, SHRINK RAP. About me (professional blurb): "Steven Daviss, MD, DFAPA, is the Chairman of Psychiatry at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Maryland. He works as a hospital-based consultation-liaison psychiatrist and clinical psychopharmacologist, consulting on depression, dementia, delirium, addictions, geriatrics, psychosis, and bipolar & anxiety disorders in medically-admitted patients. His interests include medical informatics, psychopharmacology, pharmacogenetics, health informatics, and use of HIT & social media in health care. He also has experience advising on hospital coding and billing, quality standards, and performance improvement. Dr. Daviss is Co-Chair of the CCHIT Behavioral Health Work Group, Past-President of the Maryland Psychiatric Society, and is on the Health Standards Committee for URAC and on the Maryland HIE Policy Board for the Maryland Health Care Commission. He is currently enjoying a career merging his clinical, technical, and administrative experience with health care policy, informatics, and health care reform." From our book, SHRINK RAP: "I have family members who have mental illness and grew up wondering how such a thing could happen. I initially went into medical school to learn more about the brain and body because I wanted to go into research. After completing a schizophrenia research fellowship at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, where I did postmortem brain research, I realized how much I missed clinical care. I have since worked in community mental health clinics, private practice, nursing homes, addiction programs, hospitals, and emergency departments... I like to educate people, to explain things so that others understand how I came to the conclusion I did, and Shrink Rap quickly became a place to do this. Psychiatry is, unfortunately, a misunderstood field, particularly as it intersects the broader field of medicine. One goal of this book is to open a window into our collective brain so that you can see what goes into the decision-making process for a psychiatrist. At Shrink Rap, we've been able to demystify it while also meeting our own needs for a creative outlet... You learned that Dinah is the outpatient psychiatrist with the psy- chotherapy practice. I am the consultation-liaison psychiatrist. What's that? A consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatrist works in a general hospital setting, providing consultations to medical colleagues on their patients who are admitted to regular medical-surgical inpatient units. I see the people who hallucinate after surgery, or get manic on prednisone, or are depressed after a heart attack, or take an overdose of medications. My job is to figure out what is wrong and how to make things better. I sometimes see people in the Emergency Department for similar problems, too. I am currently the department chair for psychiatry at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. I like the more biological side of psychiatry, such as psychopharmacology, pharmacogenetics, and clinical informatics. In fact, I am now pursuing my second career in clinical informatics and hope to work as a chief medical information officer-type at a hospital or a tech company next."
