Hello!
I have always written, ever since Uni. I discovered there how good it felt to take a blank sheet of paper and play around putting different words and phrases on it.
My favourite author is Charles Dickens. I really like his comment that there is magic in everything if only we 'will find it out'. When I write, I always try to look for this 'magical something' in everyday events, people and situations.
Alexander McCall Smith has this ability in spades and I love reading him, too. I also enjoy Sherlock Holmes - I think he will carry on for ever in words, film and whatever media there is to come in the future.
I currently have the following books on Amazon and bookshops in the UK:
Norwich (Halsgrove) 2009
Spirit of Norwich Cathedral (PiXZ) 2010, with Daniel Tink
When Schooldays Were Fun (Halsgrove ) 2010
Discover Norfolk - Exploring the Land of Wide Skies (Halsgrove) 2011, with Daniel Tink
Norfolk Food Heroes (Halsgrove) 2011, with Daniel Tink
World of Charles Dickens (Halsgrove) 2012
Returning, a novel, is available on Amazon UK and worldwide as a paperback
and as a Kindle download. Released March 2013.
For books about Norfolk, I work with Norfolk photographer, Daniel Tink. In these, I have provided the text and Daniel has taken the photos.
'The World of Charles Dickens', including places he and his characters walked and had adventures - lots of pics - was released in January 2012 (Halsgrove). £16.99. Some of the chapters are designed as walking tours - especially in London - and take readers along the same street he and his characters walked. Really enjoyed doing it, having re-read all of his books over a two year period.
I am currently working with Daniel Tink on a guide to the Peddars Way and North Norfolk Coastal Path, again for Halsgrove. Out late 2013.
I also write in the Far East where I have 9 books currently in print by Jinni publishing in Taiwan, and three others have recently been published in China by two of the nation's biggest imprints. These are completely different from the UK ones - they are all to do with helping students and business-people write and speak good English. They are very high-tech affairs with interactive CD Roms and can take ages to produce - another two are coming out soon in Taiwan, one of them having spent three years in production!
My latest venture is a novel, "Returning - ( subtitle): Rejection can be a deadly business" . It features two young graduates who are pretty obviously - to everyone else in the book and to the reader anyway! - in love with each other. But Leemei, such is her name, has been betrothed to a rich and powerful man in Taiwan and he is not one to be crossed. Can Eugene, such is HIS name, somehow find a way to marry his love? What do their friends think? What do their hearts say? Will the rich man, Taiwei is HIS name, kill everyone before they can make the right decision? The story begins in the cathedral city of Norwich, England, before crossing to the mountains of southern Taiwan for lots of adventures and dangers. It ends in Norwich, England. Is the ending happy or sad? Hmm......
Two of the pictures above - the twin pagodas and the Daoist temple, feature in the book.
I regularly do book signings in and around my home town of Norwich, England. I find them quite nerve-wracking, actually - will anyone come?! Maybe I will see you there!
The pic above is of Daniel Tink ( signing ) and myself at the launch in Norwich Cathedral of our 'Spirit of Norwich Cathedral'. The other, incidentally, is of me trying to look calm amongst a herd of magnificent Aberdeen Angus cows when researching another book - 'Norfolk Food Heroes'.
