Shirley Blancke and don Alberto Taxo, a senior indigenous medicine man, healer, and leader from Ecuador, developed a friendship over eight years. Don Alberto asked Shirley to write about his life and teachings including her own experiences with him, published in "The Way of Abundance and Joy: The Shamanic Teachings of Don Alberto Taxo." The book presents current indigenous Andean shamanic healing practices and elucidates the prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor flying together in the same sky. The teachings can speak to the desire of many of us now for a deeper emotional and spiritual connection to nature and its healing properties. Don Alberto’s teachings are presented in the context of the broader indigenous symbolism of the Andes, and former students and associates of his have written about how he changed their lives. Shirley Blancke grew up in England but has spent 40 years identifying and cataloging over 30,000 Native American artifacts that provide a window into the earliest history of Concord, Massachusetts, the subject of her next book. Her previous publication, "From Musketaquid to Concord: The Native and European Experience," is an invaluable resource to this day. Shirley created exhibits for the Hall of Man in Africa at the American Museum of Natural History as a Scientific Assistant there, learned traditional hula from a Hawaiian Kahuna, and hosted a ceremony for an Oglala Lakota medicine man.
