Samantha Barbas is the author of seven books, including Actual Malice: Civil Rights and Freedom of the Press in New York Times v. Sullivan (Univ. of California Press, 2023), which was listed as one of the New Yorker's Best Books of 2023. Actual Malice won a National Endowment for the Humanities award and was featured at the Aspen Ideas Festival, among other honors. Barbas has a Ph.D. in history from UC Berkeley and a J.D from Stanford Law School. She is Aliber Family Chair in Law at the University of Iowa College of Law, where she specializes in First Amendment law and legal history.
