Rita Roberts is the Nathaniel Wright Stephenson Chair in History and Biography at Scripps College and retiring Professor of History and Africana Studies at the Claremont Colleges. She is the author of "I Can't Wait to Call You My Wife": African American Letters of Love and Family in the Civil War Era and Evangelicalism and the Politics of Reform in Northern Black Thought, 1776 to 1863. Currently, Dr. Roberts is tracing how a southern free black family navigated the racial terrain from the early seventeenth century into the period of Reconstruction.
