Neil Fachie is a Paralympic, World and Commonwealth champion cyclist. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1984, he was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa at the age of 4. Although this didn't affect him much in his early years, his vision has gradually decreased over the years. After graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) in Physics, Neil became a full-time athlete with the UK Athletics paralympic squad. This culminated in qualifying for the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008 where he finished 9th in the 100m and 200m. Following this Neil lost his funding from UK Sport, the dream of making it to London 2012 was over. After reaching his lowest ebb, unemployment and a video game addiction taking its toll, he decided to make a change in his life. In 2009 Neil joined up with British Cycling and his career skyrocketed. In November that year he became a double world champion and double world record holder. In 2012 Neil not only made it to the London Paralympic Games, but came away with a gold and silver medal. He has since gone on to amass 27 medals at major championships, 20 of which are gold. He was awarded an MBE for services to cycling in 2013, before being awarded an OBE in the 2022 Platinum Jubilee birthday honours.
