I grew up with adventures. My parents were simple, Mennonite kids in Kansas who expected to be dairy farmers. Somewhere on the way back to the barn, my father, Elmer Gaede, took a turn and ended up at K.U. Medical School. Before I knew it, I was in the Last Frontier where my father was a bush pilot doctor, and my mother, Ruby Leppke Gaede, was ordering food for a year – to be shipped on a barge – before the Yukon River froze. Later, we got in on the last Homestead Act on the Kenai Peninsula and proved up 80 acres. My parents cleared a half-mile airstrip, tree-by-tree. My passion is to document history in story-form; not merely for myself, but for people groups who are not writers. That’s what I’ve tried to do in my Prescription for Adventure books – include as many people, places, and incidences as possible that take place “back then” – but all the while never bog down the pace, take the reader on bunny trails, develop too many characters, or stray from the story line. I want my non-fiction to capture the reader’s interest just like fiction. I want pages to turn! My newest book editions have a Reader’s Guide in the back. These serve as discussion for families, book reports (grades 6 -12), or book club guides. “Alaska Bush Pilot Doctor” “From Kansas Wheat Fields to Alaska Tundra: a Mennonite Family Finds Home” “’A’ is for Alaska: Teacher to the Territory” “’A’ is for Anaktuvuk: Teacher to the Nunamiut Eskimos” I have developed an Alaska Unit Study Guide using “Alaska Bush Pilot Doctor” and “’A’ is for Alaska: Teacher to the Territory.” My website has a tab specifically for educators who want resources for teaching Alaska history. http://www.prescriptionforadventure.com/studyguide.html I grew up listening to my father’s supper table tales and I believe everyone has a story to tell. I encourage each person to find his or her medium to express, preserve, and pass along that story. And, I believe adventures are possible everyday - we just need to recognize them as such. http://www.prescriptionforadventure.com/index.html
