Driver Doug, aka Douglas Meriwether, has been a transit operator since 1998 with the SFMTA. He has been asked countless times to write a book about what its like to be a bus driver in San Francisco. A question he is frequently asked: "How long have you been driving?" "Since about 5 this morning." Laughter. "Oh you mean how long I been at this job! Since December of 1998, and boy are my and legs stiff!” Getting used to the visceral daily flow of humanity at the front door of an electric trolley bus is not unlike a door greeter at a Zen center. Am I using attraction energy by putting service first? How we meet in those brief seconds can make a difference. From early morning to the last stop going home, so goes my battle with both apathy and joy, as I roll down Fillmore Street. “Thanks for Reading! Thanks for Riding!” Driver Doug. In his second book, “The Dao of Doug 2: The Art of Driving A Bus: Keeping Zen in San Francisco Transit: A Line Trainer's Guide” 2015 (published by Balboa Press), Driver Doug guides readers around San Francisco, offering advice for getting around the city and keeping the ride in time with the beats of the traffic flow. Keys to a successful ride are included in chapters, 'Not a Bus, A Person Driving a Bus,' 'Cloak of Invisibility,' "Big Mouths and Cry-babies,' and the response to, 'We've Been Waiting an Hour.' Please step up and step in and have it ready! Readers are in the driver’s seat as Driver Doug takes them through a typical day as a transit operator of a trolley coach. He describes the operator’s duties and the typical transit passenger rush that he witnesses and addresses potential problems such as overcrowded cars, lost tourists and transit malfunctions to help riders deal with such hassles. Also are golden clues about running time, recovery time, headway time, and leaving times. With his book, Driver Doug provides both a humorous and enlightening view of a transit operator’s daily life. He hopes it will educate and entertain readers. Visit the apple store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/id1412576339
