Monica L. Smith is Professor in the Department of Anthropology and in the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability at UCLA, and directs the South Asian Archaeology Laboratory at the UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology. She conducts research on ancient urbanism through archaeological surveys and excavations, in collaboration with her Indian colleagues and many global students. She has written on food and culture, objects and their role in creating personal identity, and the long history of humans as the "consuming primate."
