I wrote GENERAL IN COMMAND to honor the service of my grandfather, Major General John B. Anderson. As a Navy physician, and son of a naval aviator, I had experience around military officers. However, I was not prepared for the stunning insights an author can have, especially if the subject is a family member. When I started, I knew something of Anderson's military achievements, but little of the man. As I delved deeper, I uncovered the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of a West Point graduate, Class of 1914, who rose through the ranks to rub elbows with the military and political giants of the 20th century. My blog website gives the reader insight into his life, as does the book. Check out www.drmichaelvanness.com. Among his many achievements, he suffered bitter disappointments. At the apex of his career, Anderson made a mistake, at least in the eyes of his West Point colleague, Dwight Eisenhower. For this lapse of judgment, Anderson's promotion to three-star general was denied - and his career was over. Anderson spent the remainder of his life coming to terms with this injustice. A soldier of the great war faced his greatest challenge, forgiving Eisenhower - and forgiving himself.
