Michael Thomas was born in Raton, NM. His early novels, CROSSWINDS and the award-winning OSTRICH, established a comic direction continued in his rural Mexican adventure novel, HAT DANCE. Thomas takes a new directon in BUTTERFLY KISSES (2013), a fast-paced tale of international intrigue that plays out, ultimately in central Mexico. His short story, "Are You an American" was nominated for the 2012 Pushcart Prize for Short Fiction and Dr. Thomas is presently completing a collaborative project (SISTER CITY) that will feature his short stories along with images from photographer Miguel Gandert. An anthropologist (Ph.D.) and border person, Dr. Thomas teaches in the Honors College at the University of New Mexico where he co-directs the prestigious Conexiones language and Culture programs in Mexico and Nicaragua. Thomas has a passion for teaching which, for him, includes mentoring young writers. His view is that the best setting for this is on a hike through rough terrain, camping on a deserted beach, or on a 2400 mile road trip through Mexico. Married (again... still) he lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his wife and daughter. Write him at mthomas@unm.edu.
