Mary Ellen “Mel” Miller, APR, grew up writing for her high school and college newspapers in Upstate New York. Her time writing sports for “The Cornell Daily Sun,” and her study of communications at Cornell, led her to a TV newsroom in Johnson City, Tennessee after graduation. (The influence of her many Cornell friendships is woven into stories throughout her book.) After seven-years as a broadcast journalist, she built a career in public relations. A self-described “adrenaline junkie,” she thrives in challenging, crisis communications situations like the Boone Dam Infrastructure Project in Southern Appalachia. From 2015-2022 she led community relations for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s award-winning Boone Dam repair project. The infrastructure project used international expertise, along with top American minds, in its successful dam repair. In her debut book, Miller shares her story of working with numerous stakeholders to see the seven-year project through to its safe, on-time and under-budget completion. She was awarded the Tri-Cities Public Relations Society of America’s “Public Relations Professional of the Year” honor for her community relations work on the Boone Dam project. Mel believes in mentoring rising stars. She sponsors The MarketingMel PR scholarship at East Tennessee State University. She enjoys seeing her many mentees launch successful PR careers of their own. Mel is a founder of the Tri-Cities Chapter of the PRSA, President of the Tri-Cities Rotary Club and she serves on the board of the Sequoyah Council, Boy Scouts of America. She is Accredited in Public Relations (APR), holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Cornell University and an MBA from ETSU. As founder of MarketingMel Public Relations, she is a sought-after speaker on infrastructure communications, and she consults with clients in government and private enterprise. Mel and her husband Dan live in Johnson City, Tennessee where they are active members of their church. They have one son in college, and a Jack Russell mix named Lucky.
