Mark Walczynski is Park Historian for the Starved Rock Foundation located at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois. He has written several books on the Franco-Native American history of the Illinois Country and Western Great Lakes region including The History of Starved Rock 1673-1911 (Cornell University Press), Inquietus, La Salle in the Illinois Country, and Massacre 1769, The Search for the Origin of the Legend of Starved Rock, the latter two published by the Center for French Colonia Studies. His articles have appeared in Le Journal, Michigan’s Habitant Heritage, the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, and American Heritage. Mark is an affiliate of the Illinois Archaeological Survey, and he serves on the Board of Directors of the Center for French Colonial Studies. Mark taught history and philosophy at Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby, Illinois and is retired from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
