Mark van Vugt (born 9 May 1967, Amsterdam, the Netherlands) is a professor in psychology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam where he holds a chair in evolutionary psychology, work & organizational psychology. Dr. Van Vugt has also an affiliate research position at the University of Oxford. He has held many visiting professorships at various institutions and is the recipient of various awards for his (popular) science writings. He is also a fellow of the Galton Institute and the Royal Society of Arts and Commerce in the UK. In his (popular) science books Mark van Vugt applies insights from evolutionary biology and anthropology to understand human group behavior from leadership to intergroup conflict. His also has a keen interest in societal challenges related to environmental sustainability, volunteering and politics. He is best-known for his work on evolutionary leadership theory, the evolution of hierarchy, the male warrior hypothesis, evolutionary mismatch theory and competitive environmentalism.
