Mark Kitto lived for 18 years in China, where he built a magazine publishing business commonly known as ‘That’s’ magazines. In his spare time he performed with the Shanghai People’s Arts Theatre. When he lost his magazine business to a hostile government takeover he went to live on a mountain, Moganshan, near Hangzhou and set up a restaurant and some guesthouses. Moganshan was an abandoned village built mostly by foreign missionaries in the early 1900s. His first two books cover those stories. Mark now lives in the UK and works as a professional actor, writer and editor. His one-man play, ‘Chinese Boxing’, about the Boxer Uprising in N China in 1900 and how that story is relevant to Britain and China today, has been given some great reviews by, among others, the Spectator. Mark has written for a wide variety of publications about China. While on his mountain he was Prospect (UK)’s longest serving overseas columnist with his monthly ‘China Café’.
