Born in Staten Island, New York, Kaplan was the first American writer to receive screenwriting credit on a mainland Chinese film, (A TIME TO REMEMBER, Forbidden City Films, 1998, starring Leslie Cheung). Kaplan's plays have been produced in New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles. Former occupations include: university lecturer, white water rafting guide, line cook, international trade events coordinator, bartender, marketing assistant, Universal Studios Tram Tour Guide, light construction worker, receptionist, cashier, telemarketer, waiter, film production assistant, client services representative, after school tutor, theatrical producer, assistant editor, managed care facility worker, AV technician, and laboratory test subject. Kaplan currently teaches English at a public high school in Los Angeles, CA. He lives just outside of Cucamonga, CA with his wife and daughters.
