2018 has been a pivotal year for Lonnell Johnson with the release of a new book and establishing Higher Destiny Enterprises, the promotional framework designed to enhance his communication skills as an author, teacher, and motivational speaker. As a published author, he has also become a Certified Ghostwriter with experience as an editor and proofreader. He describes himself as a “Player-coach” who teaches writing skills while working as a professional writer as well. For more than 40 years he has taught English on the university level in Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio. As a writer he has published articles on a variety of subjects, such as biblical research and African-American literature. In addition, he previously established a self-publishing enterprise which enhanced his proofreading and editing skills. With a B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University, he was drafted into the Army 1967 and served as pharmacy instructor at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This experience introduced him to the joys of classroom teaching, eventually leading to a Master’s degree in English from Emporia State University and ultimately a Ph.D. in English from Indiana University. Dr. Johnson has recently published a new book: Embracing Your Life Sentence: How Life’s Greatest Tragedies Can Become Your Greatest Triumphs: When diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2000, he did not see “a death sentence,” but he saw a “life sentence” that transformed his thinking. He shares his holistic strategy to combat prostate cancer, weaving original poetry, Scripture, and a battle plan that shows how he emerged, not just a survivor but more than a conqueror. In addition, he has published three collections of poetry: Ears Near to the Lips of God; Sacred Jazz: Music, Mood and Mind and Stone upon Stone: Psalms of Remembrance. He also maintains a personal blog “Dr. J’s Apothecary Shoppe” and publishes through Medium.com.
