Having grown up as the daughter of immigrant parents with a mother who suffered from mental illness, LINDA APPLEMAN SHAPIRO felt compelled to share her life by writing a memoir and not a how-to manual. In FOUR ROOMS, UPSTAIRS: A Psychotherapist's Journey Into and Beyond Her Mother's Mental Illness, Shapiro describes a story which allows readers to experience how it is possible to survive years of trauma with the ability to forgive without forgetting and to move beyond pain with dignity and love.
She earned a B.A. in Literature from Bennington College, A Masters in Human Development/Counseling from the Bank Street College of Eductaion, a Master's Certification in Neuro-Linguistic Programming from the NY Institute for N.L.P. and further certifications in Eriksonian Hypnosis and Substance Abuse/Addictions Counseling.
In addition to her memoir, Shapiro is also a contributing author in the casebook, LEAVES BEFORE THE WIND: Leading Edge Applications of N.L.P.
In private practice as a psychotherapist for more than 25 years, Shapiro served as a senior staff member at an out-patient facility for recovering addicts and their families,and is also an oral historian, documenting the lives of many of New York's elderly.
Since the publication of her memoir - a 15 year work in progress - and its being named FINALIST in the 2008 Next Generation Indie Book Award, Shapiro has been invited to speak at a variety of venues and is available for speaking engagements (as long as they are within traveling distance by car).
After the book's publication, she also "birthed" a Blog, beyondatrauma.blogspot,com, and is thrilled by the numbers of people (some from as far away as Europe and the Philippines) who have become loyal readers.
As when she speaks about her book, she welcomes any feed-back to her Blogs, as well.
Married to actor and audiobook narrator, George Guidall, she and her husband live in Westchester County, New York. They are blessed with 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren.
