Pokin was born in Illinois, had a passion for storytelling from a young age and worked in radio as a teenager. She is a graduate from the University of Colorado at Denver, with a B.F.A in writing and studied writing/directing at the Colorado Film School. She received awards in the independent film community for her short films, and published her first novel (Dear Aunt Catherine) in 2017. Pokin is legally blind and resides in Littleton, Colorado with her dog where she continues to write.
