Lauren A. Spates is a Sonoma County journalist with a degree from the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism. A recent California Humanities fellow with work recognized by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, Lauren cowrote and produced "Chronic Catastrophe," an NPR-syndicated podcast examining the toll of unrelenting natural disasters on Sonoma County residents' minds, bodies and spirit. For four years, Lauren worked for Santa Rosa Junior College's journalism department where she supported the student news media operation. She now splits her time writing, editing, and producing freelance projects and caring for her lively, bicycle-loving preschooler. Lauren is a native New Yorker who lives in western Sonoma County's densely forested redwoods with her husband, their daughter and their 12-year-old spaniel.
