Having been an avid reader all my life, I now write the kind of books I want to read. So, for instance, having devoured fantasy books in my teens and onwards, I want stories with adult characters not just coming-of-age stories, and I hope there are many of you who look for them too. I love writing about people who have to make decisions in difficult situations, so I have grown-up heroes and heroines, and some of my ladies are very feisty. In fact feisty ladies crop up in all of my books, including my history series, as do characters with a broad spectrum of tastes in all respects - variety is the spice of life! I'd love to know who are your favourites in the different series. I live in England, right in the middle and about as far from the sea as it's possible to get on a small island; but I also have a deep love of the wilds of Scotland, so you'll get a lot of mountains and wild scenery cropping up in my work. I share my home with my husband and our rescued greyhounds and lurchers (greyhound cross-breeds) so long dog have a habit of sneaking into my books! Having done both a BA in Medieval Studies and an MPhil in Medieval History, it's no surprise that with the standalone magical realism books there's always a historical element creeping in alongside a touch of the unexpected. My fantasy series, Power and Empire, inhabits a quasi-medieval world, because I know how that works and I hope I make it convincing for you. I've also written a trilogy which retells the Robin Hood legend but from a different perspective, yet is set firmly in the late-12th and early 13th centuries.
