Kevin Ferris was born in Queens, New York, and his family moved to Frackville, Pennsylvania, in the anthracite coal region in 1967. He graduated from Cardinal Brennan High School in Fountain Springs in 1976 and left for basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, that summer. He spent most of the next three years at Fort Lewis, Washington, until he was honorably discharged in 1979. From there he moved to Richmond, Virginia, earning a bachelor's degree in mass communications from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has held editing positions at the Waco Tribune-Herald (Texas), the Boca Raton News (Florida), the Trenton Times (New Jersey), and The Philadelphia Inquirer, where he has been a member of the Editorial Board for about 20 years. He has had a variety of jobs on the board, including writing a weekly column on politics, veterans, and defense policy, and is currently editor of the daily Commentary pages and the Sunday Currents section. Along the way, he earned a master's degree in international relations from American University's School of International Service in Washington, D.C. His essays have appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, the Wall Street Journal, and the Weekly Standard. He has two children and lives in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
