I have spent my whole working life, and most of my spare time, thinking about and teaching philosophy and religion. That is what my books are about.
As a philosopher, I am an Idealist - that is, I think mind or spirit is the fundamental reality, and that matter is a means of expressing mind. This is pretty unfashionable these days, though it used to be the main philosophical tradition not so long ago. I am a Professor of the Philosophy of Religion, and have worked at King's College, London and Oxford Universities. I am now at Christ Church, Oxford, as well as being a Professor at Roehampton University, London. I am a priest of the Church of England, belonging to what is called its 'liberal' tradition. That is, I do not believe that any one religion has the exclusive truth, or is the only way to salvation. I do believe that many religious traditions have insights from which we can learn, and that traditional religious beliefs need to be constantly restated (but I do think ancient religious traditions should not just be discarded!)
I am very happily married, with two wonderful children, now grown up. I see philosophy as a conversation of differing views, seeking always to learn from others, to be self-critical, and to discover more profound understanding and sensitivity. I see religion at its best as a creative, joyful, compassionate, and fulfilling way of spiritual growth. That's what my books try to convey.
