My Story I am Kathy Maupin, M.D., and I have been a Board Certified ObGyn in St. Louis for the last 25 years. About 10 years ago after the removal of my ovaries, I was very sick, just like my patients today. Not only had I gained 20 lbs, but I suffered with overwhelming fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, loss of libido, anxiety attacks and depression, swelling, migraines and arthritic pain – all symptoms women over 40 will find familiar. Doctors I consulted had no idea what to do with me so they told me “You’re just getting old. Learn to live with it!” As my symptoms worsened, I underwent a total hysterectomy. Still, I got worse. Eventually things got so bad that I had to find a cure or stop practicing medicine! The initial motivation for discovering an answer to my symptoms therefore, was self serving. In my condition, the whole project was exhausting, and complex, but I discovered the answer was not that I was aging, but that I had a single condition the medical community doesn’t even have a name for, and which I now refer to as Testosterone Deficit Syndrome, or TSD. In other words, loss of testosterone, from which I and millions of others suffered, was not just “aging,” but simply the first physiologic change in the aging process that begins in our 40s. More research led me to find a treatment — bioidentical hormone pellets, containing pure testosterone, inserted sub-cutaneously, in the hip. After getting testosterone pellets inserted, I quickly returned to health, and my practice changed completely. Because I had walked the path of my patients, I felt called to make this unique treatment available to my patients. Out of the worst cataclysm of my life came a wonderful new practice, BioBalance4women, which I ran side by side with my general OBGYN practice. Replacing my patient’s hormone deficiencies, and most importantly, testosterone, is the basis for my BioBalance pellet medical practice. Replacing women’s hormones and reviving them from the symptoms that cripple them is now the calling for the last half of my life.
