Joseph Wilbred Foster III

Joseph Foster is a best-selling author, research scientist and dedicated observer of human nature. Throughout his life, he's explored the relationships between spirituality, religion, fear, and anxiety to understand what motivates us to take risks or seek safety, both physically and emotionally.

Growing up in Massachusetts, he was always the kid who took a different path, who wandered off into the mountains or went left when others were going right. While being a member of the Lutheran church he also practiced Nikeren Shoshu Buddhism, always searching for answers. He's been a leader and organizer of divorce recovery groups and is currently active in the Unitarian Universalist movement.

Joe knew he was destined to become a scientist because of his almost manic drive to disassemble and reassemble the world around him. Throughout his career working for Special Forces and the Intelligence Community, he pushed his limits of endurance to explore new techniques and strategies to help the warfighter succeed. Along the way, he became a Divemaster, an FAA-licensed pilot, and USCG-certified boat captain.

Joe and his wife, Elaine Foster, (an internationally recognized military psychologist) are authors of the best-selling book, In Movement There is Peace, which chronicles their 500-mile backpacking journey across northern Spain on the ancient pilgrimage trail, the Camino de Santiago. They have now published their second book, I Wish I Knew This Before My Divorce, a self-care guide using mindfulness practices and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to end suffering during the breakup of a relationship.
