Joe Snyder began his career as a carrier-salesman for the old Kansas City Journal-Post. He later became a copy boy at The Kansas City Star & Times and published one of the first "community" newspapers in Kansas City, called The Blue Valley News. This was on a press installed in the family garage on the east side of the city. His progress at The Star was interrupted by World War II where he rose from a private in the horse calvary to serving on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's press staff. He helped arrange the Japanese surrender ceremony on board the battleship, USS Missouri. When he returned home, he and his wife, Kathy, who he married during wartime, purchased their first weekly newspaper. They then purchased a larger weekly, but had to sell it quickly when he was reactivated to serve during Korea. Upon his return home, he and his family settled in Gallatin, Missouri, due to a contact he had from Kansas City Star days. Mr. Snyder, who died in 2014, just short of his 96th birthday, authored three books in all, Post Scripts, copyrighted in 1981; County Seat Paper, copyrighted in 1993; and Para(Graph) Trooper for MacArthur, copyrighted in 1997.
