Joe Medler was born and raised in Brockport, NY. He grew up in a multicultural home in the Great Lakes heartland with either 5 or 8 siblings, depending on how technical you get. For 20 years he has been working to provide support to families and individuals affected by various intellectual and developmental disabilities. In this role he has worked alongside folks from around the globe in fantastical settings doing unfathomably awesome and equally taxing things. Having made a home in New York City as a young man he relished the ability to live in such a vibrant and decorously diverse setting and thoroughly enjoyed his 20's and 30's navigating various outer borough arrangements, forever staying a few steps ahead of gentrification living as a nomad one lease at a time. For years he wrote almost solely as therapy, filling and discarding notebook after notebook in kitchens, cafes and on benches around the city as he navigated what was at times a stressful transition to full blown adulthood. Through this process he found his voice. Upon having children and becoming a father he gained the understanding that he needed to share that voice, both to share his story with his kids, so they might have some insight someday into who they were as a family, but also to give them a real firsthand example of what it means to be fearless and to show them that risk is it's own reward.
