Jesse Hagopian is a high school teacher in Seattle and an organizer with Black Lives Matter at School. Jesse is an editor for Rethinking Schools magazine and the Director of the “Black Education Matters Student Activist Award.” Jesse is the co-editor of the books, "Black Lives Matter At School: An Uprising for Educational Justice," "Teaching for Black Lives," "Teacher Unions and Social Justice: Organizing for the Schools and Communities Our Students Deserve," and the editor of "More Than a Score: The New Uprising Against High Stakes Testing." Jesse is the recipient of the 2019 “Social Justice Teacher of the Year” award from Seattle Public School’s Department of Racial Equity, the Seattle NAACP Youth Coalition’s 2019 “Racial Justice Teacher of the Year” award winner, and the 2013 national “Secondary Teacher of the Year” award winner from the Academy of Arts and Sciences. Jesse is a contributing author to many books including, "101 Changemakers: Rebels and Radicals Who Changed US History," "Why We Teach Now," "Strike for the Common Good," and Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove’s 10th anniversary edition of "Voices of a People’s History of the United States." Jesse’s writing has appeared in such publications as The Seattle Times, The Nation, The Progressive, and his commentary on education and politics have been featured in Time magazine, The New Yorker, HBO’s “Problem Areas” with Wyatt Cenac, NBC’s “Education Nation,” The PBS News Hour with Gwen Ifill, The Dan Rather Report, and Democracy Now!
