Jeff Cox has been a journalist since 1987 and is the finance editor for CNBC.com where he manages coverage of the financial markets and Wall Street. His stories are routinely among the most-read items on the site each day as he interviews some of the smartest and most well-respected analysts and advisors in the financial world. He also is a frequent guest on CNBC.
Over the course of a journalism career that began in 1987, Cox has covered everything from the collapse of the financial system to presidential politics to local government battles in his native Pennsylvania.
Cox joined CNBC in 2007 just as the worst of the credit crisis was about to explode and as the website was still in the infancy of its new rollout.
He helped chronicle the collapse of Bear Stearns and then Lehman Brothers, writing insightful and important stories about the demise of some of Wall Street's leading names and how investors could navigate their way through the crisis. His articles also have appeared on the Web for USA Today, the Christian Science Monitor, Yahoo Finance and other organizations. He also appears regularly on radio stations around the country, including Dallas-based "Money Sense" and others.
Cox co-authored with Peter Tanous the 2011 book "Debt, Deficits and the Demise of the American Economy."
Prior to coming to CNBC, Cox worked at CNNMoney where he wrote a series of analyses, which were the first to tie the surging demand for ethanol to rising prices at the supermarket. He wrote extensively on alternative energy while at CNN and covered technology and banking as well.
He has received multiple awards over the course of his career, including from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers as well as newspaper associations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association cited him twice for commentary, including a series of columns he wrote after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
He also served as lead editor for award-winning projects on gangs, child molestation and the cost of education, a project on which he spoke at Columbia University. The cost of education series was honored by the New Jersey Press Association for public service journalism.
In all, Cox spent 18 years in print, including nine years in senior editing positions.
A graduate of Bloomsburg University, Cox lives in Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River, with his wife, MaryEllen.
