James Cousins is a history professor at Western Michigan University specializing in the history of education, secondary education teaching, and early American history. He is the author of over 20 essays, reviews, and peer-reviewed articles. His co-authored book of "Collaboration and the Future of History Education: Preserving the Right to Think and Teach Historically" was published by Routledge in 2015. His second book, "Horace Holley: Transylvania University and the Making of Liberal Education in the Early American Republic" explores the transformation of higher education in early America. Among other awards for teaching and research, Cousins was named the 2012 Scholar in Residence at Transylvania University and the 2015 Western Michigan University Center for the Humanities fellow.
