James Thompson grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. He earned his under-graduate and graduate degrees in Philosophy at the University of Virginia. While a graduate student, he lived on the farm of Thomas Jefferson’s daughter, Martha Jefferson Randolph. During his four years in residence on Edgehill Farm, he became interested in Thomas Jefferson. Jim expanded his knowledge of Philosophy and History while teaching courses in Philosophy, Religion, and Ethics and Western Civilization at Strayer University in Alexandria, Virginia. He has written six books on these subjects all of which have been published by Commonwealth Books of Virginia. They include: The Birth of Virginia’s Aristocracy (2009); The Dubious Achievement of the First Continental Congress” (2011); Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment – Paris 1785 (2014); Thomas Jefferson’s Enlightenment: Background Notes (2015); and George Washington’s Mulatto Man – Who Was Billy Lee? (2015). His two-volume illustrated narrative on the Art of Illustration, Painting America’s Portrait, was published by The Illustrated Gallery Press of Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. Volume 1 appeared in 2016. Volume 2 was published in 2017. Jim is now completing his four volume American Revolutions series in which he combines his interests in American History, Political Philosophy, and Thomas Jefferson in an extended analysis of four political revolutions that shaped American society.
