James C. (Jim) Kearney (b. 1946) grew up on the historic 88 Ranch in Colorado County Ranch located between Weimar and Columbus, Texas, where he still resides with his wife of forty years, Paulina van Bavel. They have three grown children and four grandchildren. After college, he was drafted and served as a conscientious objector/combat medic in Vietnam and received, among other decorations, a Bronze Star, DFC, and Purple Heart. He taught German at Katy High School for several years and at present teaches at the University of Texas at Austin where he offers an upper division course on European immigration to Texas in the 19th century and a Signature Course, “Dissent in Democracy: The Civil War and Vietnam in Texas.” (For more information, please see my home page at: jamesckearney.com) His first book, Nassau Plantation (2010) won critical acclaim and launched him on a new career as an author. He received the Summerfield G. Roberts award for the best contribution to Texas history for the year 2012. In 2016 he was voted a member of the Texas Institute of Letters.
