James was born in Northwest Indiana in 1963 and lived the first eight years in Chesterton, Indiana. His family spent a few years in Powell, Tennessee and his dad's work brought them back to NWI in 1975. He graduated Lake Central High School in 1981. He took the slow boat to finish his bachelor's degree which began in 1982 at Purdue Calumet taking general education classes. In 1983 he transferred to Moody Bible Institute and graduated with a diploma in 86. He married Laura Ferguson in Nov of 1986 and continued working on the bachelor's degree in the fall of 87 and completing it in May of 90. That fall he enrolled at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and graduated with an MDiv in 1993. He earned a Doctor of Education in Leadership from Southern Seminary in May of 2005. His dissertation is titled "A Study of the Correlation Between Pastoral Theology of Discipleship and Selected Practices in the Local Church. During this time, James was known as the over achiever when it came to research writing. One assignment in Educational Psychology class was to write a 20 page paper. He wrote 60. He worked for 18 years at the Moody Bible Institute starting as the Senior Receiving Clerk, and was promoted to Supervisor of Direct Mail, then Mail Center Manager, Administrator of Instruction for Moody Distance Learning, and finally as the Operations Manager for Moody Theological Seminary. He has enjoyed both formal and informal educational experiences and has served as the pastor of two churches, interim pastor of two others, music director of four others, Sunday school and discipleship training teacher. He has held positions of leadership in the local church since he was fifteen. He and Laura have two adult children and two fur babies Pit Bulls, Rigby and Delilah. James loves to read, complete wood working projects and DIY projects.
