About the author: I think this part was harder to write than the trilogy; talking about yours truly isn’t something I’m comfortable doing, so I’ll be brief. I still find the concept of thinking about myself as a novelist, a fantastical dream. I’ve always been a nerdy sci-fi buff and often spent my free time reading the greats, such as Gene Rodenberry, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke. Their mind-bending stories fueled my already active imagination and persuaded me to write stories of my own. Unfortunately for me, when it came to writing those stories, my dysfunctional brain wouldn’t let me write them properly. I was a mischievous child who loved the outdoors (still do) but hated homework; reading and writing came difficult to me, in my early school years. I was diagnosed with a mild case of dyslexia upon entering high school; by then, the experts had a better understanding of the learning disorder. With training from some special individuals (mostly my mom) and practice, I was able to overcome my dysfunction, to a certain degree. God bless my mother and her hours of torment, trying to teach proper syntax and writing to her hardheaded son. Although my affliction was mostly a hindrance, it did give me the ability to read and troubleshoot in multiple directions—there aren’t too many machines or appliances I can’t fix. Luckily for me, the advent of new technology (computers and programs) greatly helped me with my writing, giving me confidence to post a few short stories on blog sites for friends, family, and strangers, to read. My love for science, mostly astronomy, allowed me to weave my stories with actual scientific facts. Over time, I began to receive feedback on my little stories, many asking when I was going to write a novel. Truth be told, I had tried to write full-length feature stories a few times, but I found it difficult to continue the story beyond a few chapters. Then it happened; I was helping my brother-in-law take down a few trees in his backyard—yup, you may have already guessed that I was hit by a falling tree. I was out of work for four months. But before I continue, let me explain something about this tree, and how it fell on me. It was November 11, 2010 (Veterans Day); we had felled twelve trees that day and were ready to take down tree thirteen out of fourteen, for the day. Three men gripped the rope while I made the back cut along the hinge. The wood snapped, and the tree began to fall in the intended direction, just as the prior twelve had. Then, a gust of wind blew in at roughly thirty-five mph, causing the sixty-five-foot oak tree to hang and twist upon the stump to which it was once attached. The moment I looked up at the tree spinning on that stump, I witness a vision—I had previously seen in a dream, three month prior to that day, fall at me. Well, I almost outran that tree, as it fell in my direction; luckily for me, I was hit in the shoulder by one of the two-inch branches, which had formerly been at the top of the tree. Unfortunately for me, that blow to my left shoulder knocked me to the ground (hard) while running in full stride. Thankfully, I only suffered a few scratches and some minor hip damage. As I said, the four months that I was out of work left me with little to do and little excuse for not writing that novel. The first draft was rough, very rough. Then I had to face the unknowns of self-publishing. Despite all the difficulties, I went forward because I wanted to have some evidence for my mother to show that her efforts—long ago with her hardheaded boy—were worth it. However, the first draft was rushed, resulting in some harsh criticism from the grammar police. After years of perseverance and some great advice from some consultants in the industry, I believe that the, Devil’s Eye trilogy, will be something that my parents can be proud of, and a enjoyable read for others.
