Well, let me see now. Where do I start? I was born when flared trousers were all the rage, and when it was still okay for a young boy to go out on his bike without telling anyone when he'd be back. 1971 was a good year. After a very happy childhood in Llanelli, South Wales, where I shared our house with my parents and two sisters, I moved away eventually to London, where I was to learn my trade in Kingston-Upon-Thames as a teacher. I settled in London after completing my degree until the year 2000, where myself, my beautiful wife and my daughter moved to East Sussex (Battle, to be exact), where I started my career in educational leadership as Deputy Head Teacher. Five happy years later, and with lots of hilarious experiences under my belt to be getting on with, I moved once again. This time it was Devon, where I've been till now as a Head Teacher. I love to write, and although this is my debut novel, there's more on the go, and I also have a YouTube channel entitled "STORIES FOR BIG PEOPLE." Here you'll find a collection of five hundred-word stories for grown-ups. My second novel is on the go, as well as the anthology of these short stories. I love to tell stories, and regularly go home to Wales in order to share the spoken word. Check out "Spoken Word Saturday" on Facebook, and come along! Writing is a very real passion for me, and I love to hear what people have to say about my work. There's no such thing as a perfect piece of work, just a thought-provoking one. I hope that you enjoy reading my work, and I look forward to writing much, much more. I still maintain that writing is as much fun as one person can have on their own, with their clothes on, without getting into serious trouble with the police. About Writing "The Educator." This first outing for Matt Greaves, or Greavsie, as he is known to me, has been a labour of love really. It took root around eight years ago, when I started planning it whilst Tracey (my wife) was out one evening and I was alone as the children had gone to bed. Planning the story wasn't that difficult, in honesty; however, as a newbie to the author game, I soon realised how fluid the process was, and how often I was going back to my original plans once I figured something new about each character. I ended up snatching time here and there in order to get the lion's share of it done, however juggling work and other commitments made it a part-time affair for several years. The last twelve months became more focused, and when it was finished in its first draft, I looked back on it with not only fondness, but also with a huge sense of respect for writing as a profession. It's not as easy as some people make out, especially when it's not one's main profession. Greaves is semi-autobiographical in the sense that lots of the classroom scenes, and his own character, are very much in line with some of my own traits. I'm very quick to point out (for the sake of my marriage), that falling in love with a parent was NOT based on my own personal experience. Just getting that out there. I was aiming for real characters, with real demons, in a real environment which mirrors our own. In a world where lines are very quickly blurred in terms of attitudes to race and equality, I wanted a champion who saw the poison in society at grass roots level, and be the man who could do something about it. I think I achieved that with Greavsie, and I hope that you enjoy reading his first outing. There is a second book in the planning stage, and although I don't want to give too much away, I will say that we're going to pick up his story a couple of years down the track form the end of The Educator. It's not going to be straight forward for him, and I guarantee already that he will have to make some pretty difficult decisions. Watch this space!
