Though born in Chicago and raised in Indiana Haley L. Sachs considers himself an international, having lived in Germany, Sweden, Scotland, and Denmark. He earned a degree in English at Indiana University, then served in the US Army in Germany. After getting his Master's degree at IU he returned to Europe on the GI Bill and worked under cover for several years, experience that contributed to his books "Scratch--out!" and "Betrayal." He met his wife Ulla in Stockholm and they honeymooned for a year in Scotland at Borthwick Castle. After an assignment in Denmark he returned to the USA and taught at Michigan Technological University until he took early retirement in 1986 and has published thirty books since. "Some people retire and play golf," Sachs says. "I write books because I love it." Sachs got his professional start as a free lance, writing for automotive magazines, then connected with International Blue Printer through Nationwide Trade News. After the Cuban Missile crisis, Sachs left his work as an under cover agent and freelanced through Europe's coldest winter with his wife and their two year old daughter, living in an old VW. The memoir of that adventure is "Chilly-Chilly-BANG! How We Freelanced Through Europe's Coldest Winter in a VW with a Kid." The couple's honeymoon adventure is in an extensive memoir, "From Tent to Castle" and his "1957 Sachs Arctic Expedition" details a trip to North Cape. Several collections of his short stories are on the Kindle list. Many of Sachs's books are mysteries, notably the Mystery Club series and the Irwin Glass series. They draw on, respectively, his life in a retirement building where most of the residents are women, and his views of the dark side of espionage in the latter. He also does some cartooning and did his own illustrations for the boating book, "Ahoy! Quarterdeck!" He has recorded fourteen of his books as audios for Oregon Public Broadcasting.
