Eric Booth is the author of seven books, including The Everyday Work of Art (1997, a Book of the Month Club selection and brief bestseller), to which Tending the Perennials is a companion book. Other books include his most recent, Playing for their Lives (co-written with Tricia Tunstall) about the global growth of the El Sistema movement for social change through music, and The Music Teaching Artist’s Bible. His other writing includes many essays (available on his website ericbooth.net), dozens of published articles, ten book introductions and chapters, poetry, and hundreds of articles in newsletters. Eric’s wide-ranging careers have included successful years as a Broadway actor, as an entrepreneurial businessman, and as a teaching artist. He is widely referred to as the “father of the teaching artist profession;” his four decades of work have included consulting with many arts organizations (including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, seven of the ten largest orchestras in the U.S.), cities, states and foreign countries, devising ways for artists to expand the reach and power of everyone’s birthright to creative engagement in life and art. His teaching artist work was honored with the nation’s highest award in arts education (the first artist ever to win the Arts Education Leadership Award from Americans for the Arts), and the nation’s first honorary doctoral degree for teaching artistry (New England Conservatory, 2012). He has been on the faculty of Juilliard (12 years), Tanglewood (5 years), The Kennedy Center (20 years), and Lincoln Center Education (for 40 years, where now he is the co-leader of their Teaching Artist Development Labs). He is a frequent keynote speaker and workshop leader, is the founder of the International Teaching Artist Conferences and of the ITAC Collaborative, which is the first global network of artists who work in community and educational settings. His lifelong passion for spiritual inquiry has always informed his professional work, usually under the surface, but always present. Fuller biographical information: ericbooth.net/about
