I love to learn and write about the science behind what motivates people in a variety of situations. I have contributed to publications like Discover, Popular Science, Psychology Today, and the New York Times. My first book, for adults, is What Makes a Hero? The Surprising Science of Selflessness, and my newest, for kids, is The Life Heroic: How to Unleash Your Most Amazing Self. The subjects I’ve covered, limited only by my editors’ skepticism, include creationist biology classes in Galapagos schools, suffering-inspired selflessness, and the relationship between helping and life satisfaction. I grew up in the suburbs of Western New York and live in San Jose, CA with my husband, Eric, and our two energetic young boys.
