Dr. Hernández was born in 1973 in Ensanche Julia, Santiago, Dominican Republic. He showed an interest in helping others from a young age and was elected vice president of the Rotaract Club of Santiago Apóstol La Esperanza of Rotary International during his high school years. In 1990, he received a Medal of Honor and a bachelor’s degree in physical sciences and mathematics from Liceo Ulises Francisco Espaillat. He graduated with a medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in 1996 and went on to become an assistant professor at the PUCMM School of Medicine from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, he was selected as one of the ten most talented young people in Santiago by the Presidency of the Dominican Republic. Dr. Hernández is a member of various organizations, associations, and professional societies, including the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychiatric Association (APA), the Dominican Medical Association (DMA), Inc. of New York, the Dominican American National Roundtable (DNAR), Rosicrucian Order (AMORC), and the lodges of New York City, Fraternity 387 and Juan Pablo Duarte. He was elected president of the Dominican Medical Association (DMA) in 2007-08 and re-elected in 2009-10. Currently, he serves as the president of the DMA board of directors. Over the past eighteen years, he has transformed the DMA with his hard work and visionary ideas, making him one of the most influential and powerful voices of the organization. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Hernández continues to serve the Dominican community. He has gained prestige for his leadership in the Hispanic community, recognized by Telemundo International’s “Día a Día” television program in 2007, “Herencia Hispana” by the Bronx Dominican Stop, and “the Dominican Gold Shield” in 2011. He has published many articles of interest to the local and international community. Dr. Hernández has received numerous citations, recognitions, and awards, including citations from assemblymen, councilmen, and Dominican congressmen in Manhattan, the 2018 Illustrious Latino Awards, Instituto Duartiano, and Medicoop. He is also featured in the book “100 líderes dominicanos en Nueva York” published in 2011. Dr. Hernández has a private psychiatric practice, Global Psychiatric Services (GPS), in Manhattan Borough, New York City, which he has run for almost a decade. In his free time, he enjoys playing chess, painting, writing poetry, and exploring mysticism. An annual chess tournament held in New York bears his name since 2015. He has also dabbled in acting and executive producing seven short films and movies, as well as community theater. Some of his poems have been transformed into songs. Dr. Hernández is the father of two sons, Elmer Akhenaton and Armani Enoch, who are his inspiration. He is married to Olga Bourdierd, his support and blessing. His beloved mother Juana Hernández, his dear sister Rafaelina Hernández, and his late father are his motivation, giving him the strength and love to serve others.
