Debbie’s interest in pelvic health began years ago while she was still in physical therapy school at Texas Woman’s University in Houston. Despite the limited education most student PTs were receiving at the time about the pelvic floor and the impact of pelvic floor dysfunction on so many peoples’ lives, she immediately fell in love with this field and knew that it would be her specialization. During her early years after graduation she followed her earlier focus, which was on orthopedics and sports physical therapy. During this time, she also began her post-graduate specialization training in pelvic floor physical therapy. As she learned more and more about the pelvic floor, and as she worked with athletes and every-day people who wanted to be healthy and mobile, she realized how common were these issues of pelvic floor dysfunction, especially in people who came to PT because of back pain or hip pain. As she asked more questions, she developed a very deep appreciation for how vital a quality-of-life issue it is when anyone experiences urinary incontinence, painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), or pelvic or vulvar pain (vulvodynia) due to pudendal neuralgia or pudendal nerve entrapment. There was an epidemic of pelvic floor dysfunction, and individuals not knowing that they don’t have to live with it because there is help, and she knew how to help! Thus began her journey in earnest, toward bringing together pelvic health with excellent physical mobility and function. Debbie has practiced in Texas, Alaska, and southern California, where she founded Fundamental Physical Therapy & Pelvic Wellness. She is certified in exercise training, orthopedic manual therapy, and women’s and men’s pelvic health including evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Her extensive training and broad base of experience has led her to be vigilant about performing in-depth physical testing to determine an accurate diagnosis for each client in order to inform the course of treatment. In addition to the strong emphasis that Debbie places on the combination of hands-on (manual therapy) techniques (myofascial release, connective tissue mobilization, joint mobilization) and specific movement retraining, she believes that her role as an educator with her clients is what truly empowers them to take the healing process into their own hands. She emphasizes that our bodies have a fantastic ability to heal, given the opportunity.
