David Ralston, PhD, served as the head athletic trainer for the University of Michigan’s prestigious men’s basketball program from 1990 – 1995. He had the enviable responsibility of caring for each team member, both on and off the court. Preventing and treating injuries and illness. Planning meals. Coordinating the team’s travel. Being a constant friend and encourager. Ralston, a 1985 Michigan alum himself, also had the distinction of being a member of the athletic training staff for Bo Schembechler’s legendary Michigan football teams in the 1980s. This put him on the sidelines for home games in Michigan Stadium, and road games across the country, including the 1984 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans and the 1985 Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Dave Ralston’s 30-year career in athletic training took him to all corners of the United States, as well as countless stops around the world. His journey crossed paths with Presidents, celebrities, professional athletes, cultural icons, and influencers from all walks of life. Over the course of his career, Dave was part of numerous teams that played for championships at all levels of competition, serving some of America’s most highly gifted and decorated athletes. Dave held increasing roles as an athletic trainer at three NCAA Division 1 universities, was a member of the US Olympic medical team, and worked alongside some of sports medicine’s most distinguished orthopedic surgeons. Dave was selected by his peers as Athletic Trainer of the Year, was the recipient of the National Tough Cases award for helping save the life of an injured athlete, and he received the Crystalizing the Prisms award for honoring diversity in his workplace. Dave Ralston was recently inducted into his alma mater’s Athletic Hall of Fame. After an extraordinary athletic training career, Dave retired from the sidelines, and transitioned into becoming a doctoral-level clinical Christian counselor. From training people for athletics, to training people for life. Today, David Ralston, PhD, is the founder and president of Life Training Christian Counseling in Louisville, Kentucky. Life Training, established in Owensboro, Kentucky in 2011 by Dave and his wife Ann, has become a leading provider of Christian counseling for people in the metro-Louisville region, and online across the country. His expertise has become highly sought after, especially in the areas of toxic shame, brokenness, and identity dependence. Dr. Dave is a gifted presenter, teacher, and counselor. He has spoken to groups and audiences of all sizes, both close to home and nationally. In addition to this latest book, Fabulous: My Journey with The Fab 5, Ralston is also author of the award-winning publication, Addition By Subtraction: God Turns Our Broken Pieces Into Masterpieces – providing readers a pathway from the brokenness of their past to lasting hope for their future. Dr. Ralston was awarded his BS degree from Western Kentucky University, his MS degree from the University of Michigan, and his PhD from Colorado Theological Seminary. His doctoral research examined the generational effects of brokenness and shame within three to four generations of a family system. A seventh-generation native of Marshall, Illinois, Dave’s professional life has given him the opportunity to live and work in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Texas. His hobbies are loving on his grandkids, genealogy, reading, and cheering for his Michigan Wolverines and WKU Hilltoppers! Dave and Ann Ralston have four grown children – Becky, Sean, Micheal, and Seth – six grandchildren, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Astro, and a Cavapoo named Slugger.
