The Takeo Effect (2022) THE ENTREPRENEUR: Darren Sugiyama graduated with a degree in Sociology from Loyola Marymount University in 1993. An All-Conference star player (and team captain of LMU’s varsity baseball team), Darren continued his education at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, earning a Master’s Degree in Multi-Cultural Education. His passion for working with at-risk kids stemmed from poor decisions he made as a youth, one of which resulted in him getting shot in the back of the head with a shotgun in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. Determined to make a difference, Darren ran a gang-prevention program in his native city of Long Beach, a collaborative project with the YMCA, The Long Beach Unified School District, and The Long Beach Police Department. He continued his work in Hawaii, teaching in several public high schools, counseling inmates in Halawa Prison, and counseling teens locked up in The Honolulu Detention Home. He eventually returned to Southern California to pursue a career as an entrepreneur. Darren entered the insurance business in 2003, starting his first firm Apex Outsourcing & Insurance Services. On a shoestring budget, he literally started Apex working out of hotel lobbies and coffee houses. By his 7th year in the industry, Darren had built Apex into one of the most powerful employee benefits firms in the entire country, whose annual sales topped over $37 million. Apex has held the honor of being the annual #1 producing firm in the country for Kaiser Permanente, the #1 producing firm for Health Net, the #1 case count producing brokerage for Colonial Life, #1 producing firm in Orange County for Blue Shield of California, top 30 in the state for Anthem Blue Cross of California, an elite producer for United Healthcare, and #2 in the state of California for Aetna. In addition to Apex, Darren started a wealth management firm in 2012 called DaVinci Financial & Insurance Associates. In 2016, DaVinci developed a worksite program which brought sophisticated life insurance strategies that were originally built for high-income executives, and made them accessible to middle-income working class Americans. Due this revolutionary program, in 2017, DaVinci was responsible for 25% of the life insurance policies sold for Pacific Life in Orange County, California. In 2018, DaVinci was responsible for 29% of the life insurance policies sold for Penn Mutual in Orange County, and 38% in 2019. Concurrently, in 2018, Darren also co-developed a proprietary Premium Financing program for high net worth individuals including business owners, professional athletes and the entertainment industry with business partner and ex-NFL star Jeff Faine. Their firm - Lionsmark Capital - has produced ground breaking solutions in the wealth management space and is indisputably the most sophisticated, technically sound, and technology-driven premium financing intermediary firm in the space. Lionsmark specializes in large life insurance policies ($50MM-$100MM policies) for clients whose net worth amounts range between ($20MM-$1B).
