I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1982, I moved to Kansas City where I met my husband, Tom. He is the third generation in the wholesale liquor industry. The company he worked for was Superior Wines and Liquors which was established in 1933 at the end of Prohibition. Tom's story is quintessentially American and one that always intrigued me. When I began researching my in-laws' history, I began writing The Bootlegger's Friend which tells the story of the Blando family in Kansas City. This family is one to be admired and aspired to. Tom and his seven living siblings (the youngest died in 1971 at age 3), are all happily married and live in Kansas City. Most of us are grandparents. Tom, two brothers, a brother-in-law and our son continue to work in the liquor industry.
