My life's journey has taken me through a thousand villages, towns, cities, rural communities, and wild places spread across several continents. I grew up in North Carolina and lived there until graduating with an Environmental Studies degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I then served in the Peace Corps on a beach in El Salvador, backpacked South America, moved to Washington, D.C. and graduated Georgetown Law, and went on to litigate not-boring civil cases in Houston’s federal court. After pedaling the country for the Conversations With US project, I landed in Charlottesville, VA and started my publishing company, Spoke & Word Books. These days, I live with my good dog Banjo on a rustic mountain along the Virginia/West Virginia border. Most of my non-writing time is spent building, maintaining, breaking, and fixing things, wrangling stubborn items like rocks and logs, searching creek beds for fossils, hoping it will rain or stop raining, adjusting the woodstove’s airflow, hiking with Banjo or throwing him one of his pitiful balls I should probably throw away, enjoying a coffee or a beer while listening to the birds return, enjoying not writing, and enjoying thinking about what I will write next.
