Charles Beauclerk

Charles Beauclerk is an author and lecturer on literary and historical subjects, who tutors over Skype in English Language and Literature (specializing in Shakespeare) and Latin. He also writes fiction. In the 1990s he spent six years lecturing on Shakespeare in North America, becoming president of the Shakespeare Oxford Society. His venues included Harvard, Yale, M.I.T., the Smithsonian and the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. On his return to England he acted as literary assistant to the poet and philosopher Nicholas Hagger at Otley Hall in Suffolk.

In 1999 he took a prominent role in the campaign to prevent the abolition of hereditary peers from Parliament, interrupting the third reading of the House of Lords bill to accuse the government of treason. He subsequently stood for Parliament in the Kensington & Chelsea bye-election as the first ever candidate of the Democratic Party.

He is a founding director of the Shakespeare Academy, a vice-president of the Royal Stuart Society, and was a trustee of the Shakespearean Authorship Trust for 25 years.

His biography of the pianist John Ogdon, 'Piano Man', was shortlisted for the Spear Book Awards 2014. He is currently working on a psychological history of his family entitled 'The Broken Hearth' and (with co-author Sarah Davenport) a book of Shakespearean wisdom for the modern world - 'Take Physic, Pomp!'
